Don Cherry - Coaches Corner
Don Cherry was a minor league Hockey Player in Canada for the better part of 19 seasons. He played in one NHL Game for Boston in 1955. Cherry rose through the coaching ranks after his playing days were over and was named coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. His Boston teams were successful but lost in the Stanley Cup finals twice to the Montreal Canadiens.
After he left the Bruins he gined fame as the Broadcast partner of Ron MacLean on Hockey Night In Canada. For thirty three seasons he had an intermission segment known as "Coaches Corner" which was part game analysis, and part hockey culture sermon.
He was fired from his position at CBC for statements made on air criticizing Canadians who did not wear a Veteran's poppy on Canadian Remembrance Day that honored Military veterans. His misquoted statements were used as the excuse to have him removed from the Weekly Hockey Game broadcast. When asked about the situation he did not apologize saying " I know what I said and I meant it"
Six years later, in 2025, he received the King Charles III Coronation Medal and was appointed to the Order of Ontario.
