Ernie Harwell Opens the Season - Detroit Tigers Baseball
Ernie Harwell was a Radio and Television announcer for the Detroit Tigers for 44 seasons. He started in 1960 replacing Van Patrick owing to a sponsorship change.
His broadcast partners included former Detroit 3rd baseman George Kell, Ray Lane, and Paul Carey with whom he worked for multiple seasons. Detroit Fans were outraged when General Manager Bo Schembechler fired Ernie Harwell before the 1992 season. This ill advised move was rectified when Mike Illitch bought the team from Tom Monaghan and made it his first priority to restore Harwell to his broadcasting duties.
It became Ernie's practice to recite this Bible verse before the first game of every new season. Every Tiger Fan knows that the Voice of the Turtle means -- Baseball is back!
