Jud Heathcote - Michigan State Basketball
Jud Heathcote joined Michigan State as Head Basketball Coach in 1976. He succeeded Gus Ganakis Head of the Basketball Program. Ganakis, in an unusual move, stayed with Michigan State as an assistant Athletic Director.
Jud was able to recruit Earvin Johson who was a local High School Basketball star at Lansing Eastern High School - The 1977 Michigan State Champions. At MSU Johnson was teamed with Greg Kelser, Jay Vincent, Ron Charles and Terry Donnelly as the starting five in 1979 when they won the NCAA Championship in Salt Lake City by beating Larry Bird and the Indiana State Sycamores
Jud also recruited and developed his replacement - Tom Izzo. After he was hired Jud allowed Coach Izzo him to live in his basement in East Lansing for the first year he was with the team as a part time Graduate Assistant Coach.
Jud recruited many players in addition to Johnson who went on to successful NBA Careers including Kevin Willis and Scott Skiles
Jud's teams never again reached the heights of that 1979 team but he laid the groundwork for a National powerhouse that was taken over by Tom Izzo in 1995.
