In this scene early in the book, Gandalf approaches Bilbo Baggins, the Hobbit who is sitting by his front door at his house on the hill in Bree, and makes his introductions.
After the conversation ends and Bilbo slams the front door closed, Gandalf returns and secretly marks Bilbo's door with a Rune that designates his house as the meeting place for the 13 dwarves who will travel to the Lonely Mountain. He has told the dwarves that Bilbo is an excellent burglar and will be an important asset on their journey
