Earl Weaver - Baltimore Orioles

Sports Portrait

Earl Weaver took over as Manager of the Baltimore Orioles in July 1968. In 1970 his team won the World Series. As an 8th grader I went to two games between his Orioles team and the Detroit Tigers who had won the World Series three years earlier. The Tigers, Red Sox and Orioles were the top teams in the American League in that era.

The Oriole’s best players were unbelievable. Brooks Robinson at Third, Boog Powell at First, Frank Robinson in the outfield. Pitchers including McNally, Palmer and Cuellar. The games were electric.

Watching Earl Weaver storming on the field and spitting while he argued a call at First with the umpire is a vivid memory
