John Madden - Football Coach, TV Announcer, Gamer

Sports Portrait

After an injury shortened playing career in College, John Madden became involved in coaching. He moved from City Colleges to Small Colleges to an assistant coaching position at San Diego State in 1966. He was hired as an assistant coach with the AFL's Oakland Raiders in 1967. The team won a Superbowl that season.

In 1969 Al Davis promoted him to Head Coach when his predecessor John Rauch was hired away by Buffalo. In the next ten years Madden would set a record for the highest winning percentage of any coach with 100 or more games under their belt. His record in 10 seasons was 103-32. His worst divisional finish was 2nd place. His team won the 1977 Superbowl.

He retired from Coaching in 1979 and began his Broadcasting career where he was active from 1979 thru 2009 winning 16 Sports Emmy awards in the process.

His voice commentary and image were incorporated in Electronic Art's Madden NFL games every year from 1988 until the year he died in 2021

These quotes from his announcing career are often referred to as "Maddenisms" because of their quirky logic and humor. The picture is from his time as the Coach of the Oakland Raiders
