George Perles - Michigan State Football
George Perles was a Football Player at Michigan State in the late 1950s. He played for Duffy Daugherty for three seasons and moved to a graduate student coaching position after an injury in the 1958 season cut his playing career short. He was on the MSU Coaching staff for the next 11 seasons working with the Defense
His Professional Coaching career began in 1972 with Chuck Knoll and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Perles eventually became the Defensive Coordinator for the Steelers. He was responsible for the "Iron Curtain" defense built on the Stunt 4-3. His teams won four Superbowls in the late 70s and early 80s on the strength of that defensive unit
Michigan State reached out and hired Perles as Head Coach in 1983. He had some noteworthy success including a Rose Bowl win in 1987 and two Big Ten Conference Championships.
After his coaching career ended Perles continued in his life long relationship with Michigan State as Athletic Director and as a member of the Board of Trustees
