Slapshot - Denis Lemieux Talks the Finer Points of hockey
In 1977 Paul Newman starred as the player-coach of the Charleston Chiefs of the Federal Hockey League in the movie Slapshot. It is a hilarious spoof of Minor League Hockey in the 70's
Slapshot opens with a scene where the Charleston Chief's French Canadian Goalie Denis Lemieux ( pronounced "Deh Knee") is interviewed on the local TV Station Sports Talk show, hosted by Jim Carr the team's play by play announcer. Carr, who is clad in polyester and a bad haircut, opens the interview by asking the Chief's goalie some basic questions and referring to him by name with the English pronunciation - "Dennis". Fitting with the rest of the movie the questions focus on penalties called in a Hockey Game
Denis shrugs of the English pronunciation insult and goes on the explain the penalties and demonstrate how they might happen with his goalie stick.
The Ice Rink that the games are played in is named the War Memorial Rink. This is a nod to the hundreds of small towns in Canada that have four grain silos, A store/post office, a railroad station and an Ice Hockey Arena named the War Memorial.
