... said Hanrahan, A poem about Farmers praying for rain

So Said Hanrahan.....

This Poem was published in 1919 by an Irish Catholic Priest who had a church in rural Australia. He used the pseudonym of John O'Brien for his poetry. O'Brien had a reputation and was famous as an Australian Bush Poet. O'Brien was revealed years later to be Father Patrick Joseph Hartigan when the Bush Poet's fame had grown across the country

The signature phrase from the poem used by Hanrahan "We'll all be rooned!" became a part of Australian Pop Culture. Another side note - the Bank Failure referenced in the second stanza refers to an event that occurred in Australia in 1890.

The fatalistic outlook and sense of humor in this poem seems authentically Irish
