Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over The Rainbow
In 1988 Israel Kamakawiwo'ole recorded his version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" in a single take at 3:00 in the morning. He was accompanied only by his Ukelele. Five years later this track was included on his first commercial record album released in his home state of Hawaii entitled "Facing Future".
This simple song has sold over 10 million copies. The YouTube video of this song has been viewed 1 billion times ( Billion with a B.) It also set a record for topping the World Digital Song chart for 371 consecutive weeks over a 7 year period. This song has been included in the soundtrack of movies, tv shows and commercial advertisements for the last 30 years.
Though the words are the same ones that Judy Garland sang in The Wizard of Oz, this version by "Iz" is a completely different song when you listen to it. Iz died at the age of 37 and did not live to see most of the fame surrounding his late night recording
