Shawshank Redemption - Andy Dufresne and his roofing co-workers
The scene in the movie The Shawshank Redemption that showed a group of prisoners putting a fresh coat of tar on the roof of the License Plate factory had some additional background in the original working movie script.
Red and his crew had bribed the guard responsible for picking the roofing crew so they would be selected. As it was outside work, it was preferable to the daily routine of the inmates in the kitchen or the laundry. At the conclusion of the scene in the original script, Andy Dufresne and his "co-workers" enjoyed bottles of Carling Black Label beer. This Canadian beer would have been easy to get in Maine where the prison was located. In the movie the brand of the beer served is not mentioned but it is described by Red as “Bohemian style” beer. Anybody from Detroit would recognize the tagline for Stroh’s beer.
(I have seen occasional special releases of Stroh’s in the last 15 years however Stroh’s was discontinued by Pabst who bought the brand over 30 years ago after the aging Detroit brewery closed)
The profanity comes from lines spoken by Captain Hadley (Clancy Brown) in the movie. During filming of this scene Brown left the set for a long weekend to get married. He was a newlywed before the scene was completed
